The 99th National Sports Festival will kick off today in Iksan, North Jeolla.

Starting with the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. today, a total of 24,000 athletes will compete in 47disciplines - 46 medal sports and one exhibition sport.

Swimmer Park Tae-hwan, who skipped the Korean team at the 2018 Asian Games, will appear at the National Sports Festival this week. In athletics, Kim Kuk-young, Korea’s 100-meter record holder, will attempt to redeem himself after a medal-less finish from the Asian Games. He will compete in four events at the festival - the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay. In women’s athletics, Jung Hye-lim, Asian Games gold medalist in hurdles, will compete for her second gold of the year.

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Jin Jong-oh will compete in the 10-meter air pistol and mixed team 50-meter pistol event. Na Ah-reum, who won four golds at the 2018 Asian Games, will attempt to continue her success in cycling at the National Sports Festival.
