[Living Tradition]Twin trees get recognized

May 14,2018
The Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) recently decided to designate two juniper trees at the Songgok Seowon Confucian Academy in Seosan, South Chungcheong, the country’s natural monument No. 553. The trees each have a diameter of 11.1 meters (36.4 feet) and 8.1 meters - a size regarded as rare. The trees were planted during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). As juniper trees have often been used for ancestral rituals, they can be found easily in palaces and temples, however, it is rare to see two juniper trees facing each other at the entrance of a seowon, or Confucian academy, explained CHA. Established in 1753, the Songgok Seowon is the very first Confucian academy to have been built in Seosan. There are about 12 more juniper trees that are natural monuments of the country.
