[Living Tradition] Royal arrivals

July 02,2018
An exhibition titled “The Birth of a Royal Baby in the Joseon Dynasty” kicked off at the National Palace Museum on June 27, showcasing how royal households prepared and celebrated the arrival of a new baby. Since it was a celebration for the entire nation, the process of a pregnancy from conception and prenatal care to delivery was monitored with utmost care in the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The exhibition displays various artifacts related to royal newborns, including placenta jars. Above is a set of white porcelain placenta jars and a tablet for King Sukjong (1660-1720).
