Lee Chan-oh sentenced for drugs

July 25,2018

Chef Lee Chan-oh, who was prosecuted without detention for smuggling and using drugs, was given a four-year suspended sentence at his trial on Tuesday.

At the first hearing held on July 6, prosecutors requested he be sentenced to five years in prison.

According to the justice department, “Lee Chan-oh pleads guilty to taking hashish. However, regarding [Lee] smuggling [the drugs in to the country], it is hard for us to judge from the evidence submitted at the courtroom.”

They added, “As Lee Chan-oh is a famous chef, his drug use could negatively influence society. We also weighed the offenses with [the fact that] Lee Chan-oh does not have similar charges [in the past] and the fact that he has been getting treatment for depression and a panic disorder.”

Lee was indicted on May 10 for smuggling marijuana into the country and using the drug three times.

Lee has appeared on the JTBC cooking show “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator” and MBC’s “My Little Television.”
