2018 album sales reach new highs

Dec 19,2018
This year proved to be a year like never before in the history of K-pop, and proof of that is in 2018’s aggregate album sales numbers, which exceeded 20 million in total, according to the Gaon Music Chart on Tuesday.

Korea’s biggest music chart announced Tuesday that a total of 20 million albums were sold between January and November this year, the highest number since the chart was launched in 2010.

The number increased by 4 million copies compared to last year - a positive outlook considering that album sales have been falling consistently due to the rise of streaming music services.

The rise in album sales was mostly thanks to immense popularity of boy bands such as BTS, Exo and Wanna One, according to Yonhap News.

BTS’ “Love Yourself: Answer” sold 2.2 million copies, while “Love Yourself: Tear” sold 1.8 million copies. They were followed by Exo’s “Don’t Mess Up My Tempo” at 1.2 million copies and Wanna One’s “0+1=1(I PROMISE YOU)” at 780,000 copies.
