The Kim Sisters go to Broadway

Dec 26,2018

The story of Korea’s first-generation girl group, The Kim Sisters, is in production as a musical and producers are aiming for Broadway, a New York-based production company said Monday.

Dimo Kim Musical Theatre Factory said it is producing the musical in cooperation with the three-member group’s leader, Kim Sook-ja, and Hollywood film producer Lucas Foster. It hopes to stage its first show next year in New York.

The company, established in 2015, produced such off-Broadway shows as “Comfort Women,” “Green Card” and “Interview.”

Director Kim Hyun-jun said the story of The Kim Sisters has a “power that is hard to verbally explain,” and that now is the time for such a story to be told as Korean pop stars like BTS are discovering huge success in the United States.

The group, considered pioneers of K-pop, debuted in 1953 and became the first globally known Korean singing sensation. They rose to stardom while performing for U.S. soldiers during the 1950s and went to America in 1959, where they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show more than 20 times and also performed in Las Vegas.

The company said it has a strongly dramatic story to tell and that it also plans to make a television series out of the group’s story.

Among the trio, only Kim Sook-ja, also known as Sue, is still alive.
