Shim Eun-kyung wins Best Actress

Jan 23,2020

Actor Shim Eun-kyung won her third award for her role in Japanese movie “The Journalist” (2019) when she was announced as the winner of the Best Actress trophy for the 74th Mainichi Film Awards on Wednesday, according to her agency.

The 74th Mainichi Film Awards ceremony will be held on Feb. 13.

The film is loosely based on Tokyo Shimbun reporter Isoko Mochizuki’s novel “Shinbun Kisha” (translated to “The Journalist”) and her reporting on a 2017 political scandal involving Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife, Akie Abe, regarding the building of Moritomo Gakuen, a private educational institute.

Shim was awarded for her role at the 43rd Japan Academy Film Prize and the Tama Cinema Forum in Tokyo last year.

She was said to have been selected as the lead actress for the role in “The Journalist” after a number of Japanese actresses turned down the role for fear of being labeled as antigovernment. The movie’s producer Mitsunobu Kawamura has denied the reports.

Shim has since starred in other Japanese films, including “Blue Hour” (2019) and “Fictitious Girl’s Diary” (2020).

She won the Best Actress award for her role in “Blue Hour” at the 34th Takasaki Film Festival.
