A whistle-blower who revealed rampant abuses by the owner of two of Korea’s largest online file sharing systems said, on Tuesday, that the businessman tried to shut witnesses up with cash from his massive illegal pornography ring.

At a press conference, the whistle-blower introduced himself as a senior manager at one of the companies owned by Yang Jin-ho, the chairman of Korea Future Technology and suspect in massive abuse scandal. The employee told reporters that he decided to reveal the full extent of Yang’s alleged crimes and dispel rumors about his own participation in the scandal.

“As file sharing system workers, we realized how serious the problem of digital sex crimes were and worked to eliminate illegal pornography on our own behalf,” the employee said at the office of Newstapa, a media outlet run by the Korea Center for Investigative Journalism, in central Seoul. “But when I found out that [Yang had been operating a massive porn distribution network], I couldn’t contain my outrage and sense of betrayal.”

The whistle-blower held up a thick envelope filled with cash to reporters, which he said Yang gave to him and other workers to silence them after the allegations first emerged. He also said Yang ordered employees to get rid of evidence by deleting content on their computers when police launched their investigation into him earlier this month.

The executive’s multiple crimes first became the subject of intense national attention early this month after Newstapa revealed footage of Yang physically assaulting one of his former employees and indulging in bizarre acts of cruelty towards animals, like shooting a live chicken with a bow and arrow and decapitating it with a Japanese sword. But the abuses were soon overshadowed by allegations that Yang headed what civic groups have called a massive illegal porn distribution cartel.

In a follow-up report, Newstapa alleged that Yang made a fortune of around 40 billion won ($35.6 million) from the popular online file sharing systems Wedisk and Filenori, which he effectively owns. The two websites, which have millions of users each, are known to be conduits for a vast pornography network that spread explicitly illegal content, like spycam footage and revenge porn. The whistle-blower revealed Tuesday a third file sharing website run by Yang through the use of a paper company and a frontman. This website, as well as a few other subsidiary services Yang owned, also circulated illegal porn.

By the time this company was sold, its worth had grown almost eightfold from its initial value, and much of the profits went untaxed into Yang’s slush fund. The whistle-blower alleged that Yang’s slush fund may have contained at least 4 to 5 billion won, which funded his lavish lifestyle.

Yang was arrested by police last week on a series of charges including assault, coercion and violation of laws on private information and sexual abuse. Police also charged him with consuming illegal drugs like marijuana, which witnesses said he forced his employees to smoke.
