Hyundai Mobis, an auto parts affiliate of Hyundai Motor, said it will invest 3 billion won ($2.8 million) in building a center dedicated to parts design at its design R&D center located in Yongin, Gyeonggi, the company said Thursday.

Dubbed the Design Model Workshop, the high-tech facility will be 430 square meters (4,628 square feet) and allow 3-D printing of Hyundai Mobis’ major product lineup as well as clay-modeling of new models in their actual size. Making a clay model of a car allows researchers and designers to come up with optimum auto parts that fit the overall design of a car.

The center will be a one-stop workshop that handles design, manufacturing and revision of auto parts, which is intended to enhance work efficiency at the company, Hyundai Mobis explained.

“The new design model workshop will enable Hyundai Mobis to preemptively and precisely respond to customers’ demands,” the company said in a statement.

“The usage of 3-D printers shortens the manufacturing time of auto part samples, reducing costs,” the company added.

“For example, one of Hyundai Mobis’ main products is headlamps. With the help of 3-D printers, we are going to make multiple headlamps with diverse designs and offer them as options to our clients to see what best fits their model,” the company said.
