SK Hynix receives UL zero waste silver certification

Feb 20,2019
SK Hynix said Tuesday it was given a zero-waste certification from UL International, a U.S.-based safety consulting and certification firm.

According to the chipmaker, it is the first Korean company to receive the “Zero Waste to Landfill” certification. In total, 14 global companies have achieved the rating.

UL International has awarded the certification annually to companies since 2012. It is based on their efforts to recycle waste produced at facilities. The rating is divided into three levels: platinum, gold and silver.

The chipmaker was given a silver rating.

The company’s Icheon facility in Gyeonggi achieved a recycling rate of 90 percent and its Cheongju facility in North Chungcheong had a 94 percent rate in 2017.

The certification comes after SK Hynix announced in October last year it would reduce carbon emissions by 40 percent and increase the company’s overall recycling rates to 95 percent by 2022.
