You can now talk to your Renault Samsung car

Renault Samsung Motors on Monday unveiled an artificial intelligence (AI)-based infotainment system that allows users to use voice commands while driving.

The Korean unit of the French automaker announced in a statement Monday that the new in-vehicle system named “EASY LINK” will be installed on the upgraded QM6, a sports-utility vehicle unveiled last month.

EASY LINK, developed in partnership between Renault Samsung Motors and telecom company KT, recognizes human voices to control audio and navigation features.

The voice assistant system can play music, check the weather, access car manuals and traffic information, as well as search the internet to provide users updated information on exchange rates, stock markets, translations and more. A user can simply call out “Genie” to access the voice assistant with no need to press a button.

EASY LINK’s AI system is based on KT’s voice assistant platform “GiGA Genie.” An 8.7-inch screen is available as an add-on for 750,000 won ($637).

Drivers who choose to purchase the EASY LINK option receive one year’s worth of data and content as well as three years of online navigation service. The automaker is considering offering the voice assistant system in other Renault Samsung Motors models in the near future.

“Cars have evolved from a mere transport system into a cultural space,” said Kim Tae-joon, head of the business division at Renault Samsung Motors, in a statement.

“In keeping up with this trend, Renault Samsung Motors added innovative infotainment technology to the new QM6 and provided customers with a more enjoyable and safer driving experience.”

Renault Samsung Motors’ sales in Korea plunged 25 percent to 11,122 vehicles in June from 14,801 a year earlier. The automaker also recently unveiled an upgraded SM6 midsize sedan.
