Park In-bee won’t play in the UL International Crown

Korean golfer Park In-bee will not compete in a premier women’s team match-play competition this year, her agency said Friday.

Bravo & New said Park decided not to take part in the UL International Crown, a competition that features women golfers from the top eight countries, as she feels that other golfers from her country should compete instead of her.

Park, who is currently No. 1 in the women’s world rankings, has already competed in various competitions under the Korean flag, including the UL International Crown and the Olympic Games.

Under the competition rule, if a player is unable to compete or chooses not to compete, the spot will be filled by the next highest-ranked available player from the world rankings as of July 2.

In this case, Choi Hye-jin, who was ranked No. 11 on July 2, could take Park’s spot.

This year’s UL International Crown will be hosted at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea in Incheon from Oct. 4, with Korea seeded No. 1. Park was originally set to represent her country with Ryu So-yeon, Park Sung-hyun and Kim In-kyung in front of home fans.

Korea has yet to win the biennial competition despite having top-class golfers. The country took third place in 2014 and finished runner-up in 2016.

This year’s competition features defending champion the United States, as well as Japan, England, Australia, Thailand, Sweden and Chinese Taipei.

Korea to host 2019 U-18 Baseball World Cup in Busan

Korea has won the right to host the world’s premier youth baseball tournament next year, the national governing body said Thursday.

The Korea Baseball Softball Association (KBSA) said Gijang County, Busan, will host the 2019 World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-18 Baseball World Cup.

“We told WBSC chief Riccardo Fraccari at the WBSC Congress in Botswana last year about our plans to host the tournament,” the association said. “Gijang Country in Busan, which hosted the 2016 WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup, expressed a strong desire to stage the tournament, so we made a bid and won.”

Korea will host the tournament for the second time. The country previously staged the U-18 Baseball World Cup in Seoul in 2012.

“We believe that Gijang County will be a mecca for Korean baseball,” said Gijang County Governor Oh Gyu-seok. “We’re ready to provide support to make the tournament successful.”

Korea has won the U-18 Baseball World Cup five times, with the most recent title coming from the 2008 edition.

Cuba has the most titles at 11, followed by the United States at nine.

Korea was the runner-up in the 2017 tournament in Canada after losing to the United States.

“We will review our national team operations and support manuals so that we can win the title at home,” said KBSA President Kim Euong-yong.
