Midfielder Nam Tae-hee to miss out on Asian Cup due to torn ACL

Nov 24,2018
Korean attacking midfielder Nam Tae-hee will miss the upcoming continental football tournament due to injury, a national football team official said Thursday.

Korea Football Association (KFA) official said a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test showed Nam has a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The official said that, since Nam is expected to take about six months to fully recover from his injury, the player is certain to miss the 2019 Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup, which will kick off on Jan. 5 in the United Arab Emirates.

Nam started in Korea’s 4-0 win over Uzbekistan in a friendly match at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre in Nathan, a suburb of Brisbane, Australia, on Tuesday. He scored the team’s first goal in the ninth minute with his volley off Lee Yong’s cross.

But in the 51st, Nam fell down on the pitch when defending a Uzbekistani player and was later taken off on a stretcher. Nam then went through a medical test at a hospital in Australia.

The KFA official said Nam has returned to his Qatari club Al-Duhail and will soon have a surgery on his right knee.

Nam has been a core player for Korea since head coach Paulo Bento took over the helm in August. He started in all six of Korea’s matches under Bento and has scored two goals. He was the second best scorer for Bento’s side behind striker Hwang Ui-jo, who has netted three goals.
