1) In North Korea, April 15 marks one of its most important holidays, the “Day of the Sun.”

2) Day of the Sun is when North Koreans commemorate the birthday of their first leader, Kim Il Sung (born on April 15, 1912). It has been celebrated every year since 1997.

3) On Day of the Sun in 2017, North Korea held a large-scale military parade and revealed their latest ballistic missiles.

4) In the past, the time around Day of the Sun always came with tension on the Korean Peninsula due to such provocations and demonstrations by North Korea.

5) However, this year’s ceremonies for Kim Il Sung’s birthday went by in relative peace, without particular movements in the military.

6) The state-run media of North Korea recently reported that athletic and cultural events such as the Friendship Art Festival, the Pyongyang Marathon and the Kimilsungia Flower Festival were held to celebrate the Day of the Sun.

7) At a leaders’ conference held on April 14, Kim Yong-nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, emphasized the need to defend themselves militarily and respond to sanctions without relying on other countries.
